How the Video Challenge Project WorksThe Video Challenge Project uses video to connect a worldwide community of mathematical problem solvers.
The video linked at the right gives an overview of how the project works. The four phases are also explained below. |
|
Phase 1: We post a challenge video.
The challenge video will be posted on YouTube and linked through the front page of our website. Our website will have any other resources that might come in handy as you face the challenge.
Phase 2: You explore the challenge, ideally with a team of friends.
The challenge might be hard, but don’t let that get you down! Experiment! Make creative mistakes: they could lead to great insight! Then, after you have some ideas about the challenge (maybe you solved it, or maybe not -- it’s OK either way), you’re ready for...
Phase 3: You make a response video with your thoughts on the challenge.
In your video you should explain wherever you are in your process of working on the challenge. Have you arrived at a solution? Great! Tell us what you got and how you got there. Have you gotten stuck along the way? Also great! Tell us how far you got, where you got stuck, and why.
Remember, becoming a skilled problem solver takes time and practice. Sharing your partial solutions will be helpful for you and for other people who are thinking about the challenge.
When you have uploaded your video, send us a link through Facebook, Twitter, or directly by email. Please keep in mind these guidelines for creating response videos.

Phase 4: Watch other people's response videos!
We will maintain a page with all of the response videos that we receive, along with additional challenges based on what comes up in the responses.
Maybe someone solved the problem a different way than you did. Maybe someone got a different answer than you did. (Which one of you is right? Both of you? Neither of you?) Maybe someone's response helps you get un-stuck about the challenge. Maybe something in your response helps someone else get un-stuck!
No matter what, we will all learn a lot by communicating our ideas and by trying to understand the ideas of others.
