Collaborative Mathematics

Maths Explorations at Oslo International School

In the Maths Explorations club we will play and study mathematical games, investigate puzzles and patterns, and think deeply about interesting problems. Our goals include both learning more about mathematics, and developing our skills as creative, patient, and collaborative problem-solvers.

Participants may find some of our explorations quite challenging. We probably won't encounter many questions that can be answered in just 10 quick seconds! Rather, we will need our individual patience and determination, as well as the collaboration and combined effort of all club members.

Participants in Maths Explorations are expected to...

  • Listen carefully and respond respectfully to the ideas of others. We learn more when we try to understand how someone else sees the same problem that we are working on -- even if our approach is different from theirs.
  • Communicate our own ideas clearly. Our own thinking on a topic becomes clearer when we try to explain our reasoning to other people.
  • Stay focused on the session’s activities. Each session will contain several problems to explore, so there should always be something to work on.
  • Bring something to write with. All other handouts and materials will be provided.

In some of our past sessions...

  • We have tackled problems about handshakes and pirates.
  • We have tinkered with pandigital puzzles.
  • We have played games with dice, and wrapped our brains around the card game Set.
  • We have combined math and art by creating modular origami and by drawing a famous fractal triangle.
